Project Overview
The homeowner bought this house about a year ago and wasn’t completely sure how much life was left in the shingles. After inspecting the roof, it was clear they were old and worn out. He decided to upgrade to a red metal roof instead of waiting for problems to show up. Since we were switching from shingles to metal, we also replaced the skylight so the entire system would be built properly from the start. The work was done during winter, so we had to move carefully and plan each step.
Project Challenges
Winter conditions made timing and protection important. We couldn’t leave parts of the roof exposed, so we worked in stages and covered areas with tarps to keep snow out. The skylight was another key detail. The existing one was made for shingles, but metal roofing requires a different type of installation. It had to be rebuilt properly so the new roof would perform the way it should.
Installation Process
Stage 2: Skylight Replacement
We took the old skylight out and installed a new upraised frame using 2x8 wood for a curb-mounted skylight. The new skylight was installed properly on the curb with a membrane around the bottom and ready to be flashed. It is important to rebuild the skylight the correct way so that it will work with the metal roof rather than against it.
Stage 1: Double Wood Strapping & Protection
We began by installing double wood strapping to create a solid base for the metal panels. Because of the weather, we protected open sections of the roof with tarps while we worked. We also made sure there was a protective layer underneath the system, since we never install metal panels directly over exposed wood.
Stage 3: Temporary Winter Protection
Because the project took place in winter, we covered part of the roof with tarps after preparing the base to keep snow and moisture from getting underneath until we could continue the installation.
Stage 4: Metal Panel Installation
Once the structure and skylight were ready, we installed the red metal panels across the whole roof area. Each panel was secured carefully to ensure a straight layout. Extra attention was given around the skylight area to make sure the panels and flashing worked together for proper long-term protection.
Results
The house got the red metal roof, which gave it a new look and a long-lasting roof. More importantly, the skylight was rebuilt the right way to match the metal system. Even with winter conditions, the project was completed carefully and without shortcuts. The homeowner now has a roof that’s built properly from the structure up.
