Project Overview

MROOF just completed a very interesting project. The homeowner contacted us about his home built in the 1840s. The house was more than 180 years old. The roof still had 40-year-old cedar shakes. We removed the shakes and exposed the original wooden planks with wide gaps. We worked with extra care because of the age of the house.

Project Challenges

We removed the 40-year-old cedar shakes and exposed the roof. The old wooden planks underneath had large gaps between them. We installed the Roofnado LapLock ice and water shield membrane right away. If it rained, the roof base could have been damaged.

Installation Process

Stage 2: Membrane Installation

We immediately applied the Roofnado LapLock ice and water shield membrane. Because of the wide gaps in the old planks, this layer was critical to protect the home from potential water damage.

Stage 1: Removing the Cedar Shakes

We removed the 40-year-old cedar shakes, filling several bins with material. Once cleared, the old plank decking was exposed, increasing the urgency to protect the structure.

Stage 3: Metal Panel Installation

With the roof properly sealed, we installed the metal panels according to our system, ensuring precise placement and clean detailing that respected the home’s historic structure.

Stage 4: Final Steps

We finished the project by installing the ridge components and securing all the flashing. We added wood where needed to level the gables. We installed the custom metal gable profile to keep the original look of the house. We checked the entire roof one more time to make sure everything was sealed and protected.

Results

We completed the project on time. We protected the old house with a new metal roof and a proper membrane underneath. We kept the authentic look of the gables. The homeowner was very happy with the final result.
