Project Overview

We recently completed a roof transformation for an elderly homeowner in Pickering, initiated by her son who wanted to ensure her house was protected from potential leaks. The old shingle roof was showing signs of wear, and to enhance both durability and appearance, the son opted for a bold red metal roof. Along with the roof, new gutters and downspouts were installed to improve water management around the house, making the entire project a complete exterior refresh

Project Challenges

While working on the roof, we discovered damage to the chimney, which, though not causing problems yet, posed a significant risk for future leaks. Additionally, the old ventilation system needed upgrades to ensure the roof's longevity and the home's energy efficiency

Installation Process

Stage 1:  Gutters and Downspouts Installation and wood strapping

Our first step was to replace the aging gutters and downspouts. We installed a new downspout in the backyard to improve drainage, which had been lacking before. Since there were no active leaks, we utilized the efficient method of adding wood strapping over the existing shingles. Vertical wood strips were installed to ensure a secure foundation for the new metal panels, followed by horizontal strips to improve ventilation and prevent moisture buildup

Stage 2: Starter Flashings Installation

Starter flashings were installed along the roof’s perimeter, including the garage. These flashings play a crucial role in ensuring that water is directed away from vulnerable edges and into the gutters. By securing the flashing, we laid the foundation for the metal panel installation, safeguarding the house against water infiltration

Stage 3: Chimney Repair and Ventilation Preparation

Addressing the chimney damage was a priority. We repaired the cracks with mortar and applied a bitumen primer to reinforce waterproofing. Along with this, we removed the outdated ventilation outlets, covering the old ones to prepare for a new ridge ventilation system. This process not only fixed the existing issues but also prepared the house for better airflow management

Stage 4: Metal Panel Installation

The installation of the bright red metal panels began at the bottom, ensuring each panel overlapped the previous one for a watertight seal. The new ventilation outlets were installed, featuring silicon gaskets to enhance waterproofing. Ridge caps and gables were added to protect the roof edges, and snow stops were installed to prevent large snow accumulations from sliding off dangerously in the winter months
