Project Overview
We recently completed a metal roof installation for the middle unit of a triplex in Courtice, chosen by a couple in their 60s for lasting durability and ease of maintenance. Positioned between shingle-roofed neighbors, this upgrade was carefully selected to harmonize with the surrounding units. By choosing metal tiles for the roof, they’ve ensured their home remains visually appealing and secure against the elements for years to come
Project Challenges
The main challenge was the section of the roof shared with the neighbor, which required precise work to ensure a secure and seamless connection between the metal roof and the neighboring shingles. Additionally, careful flashing and sealing were necessary to prevent leaks and maintain durability at the property borders
Installation Process
Stage 1: Wood Strapping Preparation
We began by installing vertical wood strips over the existing roof to create a secure base for the metal panels. Horizontal wood strips were then added to enhance ventilation and prevent moisture buildup, ensuring the roof's longevity and structural integrity
Stage 2: Flashing Installation
Starter flashings were carefully installed along the roof's perimeter, including the shared garage section. This crucial step provided a watertight seal and directed water safely into the gutters, laying the groundwork for the metal panel installation
Stage 3: Vent Outlet Removal and Pipe Sealing
An unused furnace pipe was removed at the homeowner's request, and the opening was sealed with a custom metal flat panel. New vent outlets were installed to ensure proper airflow and modernize the ventilation system for optimal performance
Stage 4: Metal Panel and Ridge Cap Installation
The metal panels were installed, starting at the bottom and overlapping each panel for a watertight seal. Ridge caps were added to the shared garage roof, with silicone sealing used to secure the transition between the metal and shingle roofs, ensuring durability and protection against leaks. Finally, snow stops were installed to manage snow accumulation and improve safety during winter
