Project Overview
At MROOF, we recently completed a metal roofing installation on a duplex in Mississauga, addressing a persistent squirrel infestation that had plagued both homeowners. The black metal roof not only provided a sleek aesthetic to complement the building’s white siding but also ensured lasting protection against further squirrel activity. The collaborative approach by both homeowners made this project cost-effective, allowing us to secure the entire roof and eliminate the problem for both families
Project Challenges
The key challenge for this project was the ongoing squirrel infestation, which had created entry points in the roof. Additionally, one side of the roof had two aging skylights that required replacement, while the roof itself had a mix of newer and older shingles. To enhance protection, both homeowners agreed to add extra waterproofing and rain barriers, ensuring a well-insulated and durable solution for the long term
Installation Process
Stage 1: Establishing the Roof Foundation
We began by installing a waterproofing membrane and building a solid wood strapping foundation for the metal roof. We located the joists and installed vertical wood strips through the shingles and plywood into the framing. These vertical strips formed the base for the roof. Next, horizontal wood strips were added with precise spacing. This structure creates a secure base and improves air circulation, reducing heat transfer and enhancing insulation year-round
Stage 2: Skylight Replacement and Waterproofing
We removed the old skylights and built reinforced frames for the new ones. The skylights were installed with precision, and we applied extra waterproofing insulation around the casings for better moisture protection. To further safeguard the installation, we added metal flashings. Once secured, we installed starter flashings along the roof's edge to cover the first horizontal wood strips, ensuring a smooth, watertight connection to the gutters
Stage 3: Installation of Monterey-Style Metal Panels
We installed Monterey-style black metal panels from the bottom up, overlapping each panel for a watertight seal. At the homeowners' request, we completed minor gutter repairs and installed new vents to improve ventilation. To maintain a cohesive look, we painted the kitchen ventilation outlets black, matching the new roof for a unified appearance
Stage 4: Squirrel-Proofing and Final Sealing
To provide complete protection against squirrels, we thoroughly sealed all flashing connections where the roof meets the siding, ensuring no gaps were left for water or pests to enter. We carefully covered the holes previously caused by squirrels, securing them to prevent any future intrusions and guaranteeing that the unwanted guests would not return.
