Oshawa Metal Roof: A Smart Upgrade Before Winter

Project Details:

  • Location: Anderson Avenue, Oshawa

  • Duration: 2 days

  • Roof Area: 1,050 sq. ft.

  • Material: ThyssenKrupp 26-gauge G90 galvanized steel

  • Design: Monterey Metal Tile

  • Color: Black

  • Cost: 7,000–8,000 CAD

Project Overview

A retired couple in Oshawa decided to replace their 15-year-old roof and remove an unused chimney preparing for a worry-free winter. Since the chimney was no longer in use and was blocking proper water flow, the homeowners chose to have it removed as part of the project. As a result, we improved water drainage and ventilation, ensured full wildlife protection, upgraded the look, and made the roof 100% ready for winter

Project Challenges

Our most important task was to safely remove the unused chimney to improve drainage. With the homeowner’s 45 years of experience in the field, coordination was smoother than ever, and we successfully cleaned and prepared the surface for the new metal roof installation.

Installation Process

Stage 1: Chimney Removal and Roof Preparation

We built a temporary wood strip to provide the experienced homeowner with safe and easy access to the roof for removing the unused chimney. Once the removal was complete, we covered the entire roof surface with a waterproof membrane to protect the roof deck and create a clean base for installation.

Stage 2: Wood Strapping and Ventilation Setup

We installed double wood strapping and ridge ventilation to create a solid and ventilated base for the metal panels. To protect the attic space, we also covered the ridge vent outlet with a metal mesh, preventing access for wildlife such as raccoons, chipmunks, and squirrels.

Stage 3: Metal Panel Installation

With the base fully prepared and ventilation in place, we began installing metal panels across the entire roof, aligning each one precisely to ensure durability, weather resistance, and a sleek appearance.

Stage 4: Final Touches and Attic Protection

After the metal panels were installed, we completed the project by applying a breathable membrane inside the attic to protect it from dust, insects, and snowflakes during winter. This final step added an extra layer of protection, making the roof winter-ready and maintenance-free

Results

The new black metal roof gave the retired couple a sleek, durable, and low-maintenance solution—just in time for winter. With the chimney removed and ventilation installed, the roof is ready for any weather. The homeowners were extremely satisfied with the result and how quickly the team completed the project.
